Orlando Business Journal Writes Exclusive: Advanced Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery lines up more growth this year

Orlando Business Journal Writes Exclusive: Advanced Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery lines up more growth this year Ryan LynchStaff WriterOrlando Business Journal Photo Credit: Jim Carchidi/OBJ Advanced Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery is keeping up its expansion push after a strong 2021. The Maitland-based practice has 155 clinics after adding 16 last year, nine of which were in Florida. Advanced Dermatology has more than 550 employees in Central Florida, its core market, and expects to add space for more growth, CEO Brian Griffin told Orlando Business Journal. Advanced Dermatology is targeting expansion in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., along with South Carolina. Locally, it just opened its fourth location in The Villages, where it now has 52 employees. The company also is moving some of its existing clinics to larger locations, some with 40% to 50% more space on average. It just completed one of those relocations in north Florida's Julington Creek in January, with moves in Altamonte Springs, Port St. Lucie and Ponte Vedra Beach to be completed by the end of the year. Here, Griffin speaks more about the company's expansion effort, challenges and what's next: What role will metro Orlando play in projected growth? We are growing nationally, but we grew up in the Orlando area and continue to focus on growing here in a few ways. We continue to look at potential acquisitions for growth in the area, but we also develop de novos in the areas. Our relationship in The Villages is a strong partnership we have with The Villages Health. That’s where we recently started establishing de novos. We recently stood up our fourth location there, our colony location. How did the expansions of specialties grow jobs for the practice? A significant area of focus I introduced last year was on growing our aesthetic business. We expanded the level of services we provide in aesthetics, specifically in Central Florida, expanding our investment in lasers and other technologies. We’ve added over 100 people across our footprint during the last year. What is the biggest challenge for the practice? Growing into new regions we have not been before, which I view as an opportunity. What’s cool about that is, in the last quarter of last year, we acquired a number of practices in South Carolina. We have been successful in establishing a hub practice and building around it, much like we have done in The Villages, where you start with one location and look at the expansion after. We’re looking at that across the country, where we are picking key geographies that are somewhat proximate to an existing footprint, making initial investment and then growing in that area. The most recent area is our new Fort Mill, South Carolina, location, and that surrounding area. That is a challenge in the fact you are breaking into new markets, but we’ve proven we’ve been able to do that and grow once we establish a foothold. What factors play into acquisitions? In terms of new-name clinics and acquisitions, there’s a couple we are targeting now in key locations where we have locations and are looking to expand our access. During the course of the year, our business development team is in discussions all the time, and if we see a solid opportunity that complements our existing footprint, we will go after it. Where may be some of the other areas where you grow jobs across your network in 2022? One is growth in Mohs services. We are hiring quite a few Mohs surgeons, both in Florida and beyond, to expand the level of services and patient access so you don't have some patients traveling hours to get to a Mohs surgeon. We’re trying to expand that access in all our markets. Another key area is research. We've expanded our focus on research in our clinics, but we also have support staff that works with our clinical organization around the data, which we will be hiring more of in the future, as well.

For This Ormond Beach Brother and Sister Medical Team, Focus on Patient Care Runs More than Skin Deep

by Hanna Qasem on Feb 13 2022
For This Ormond Beach Brother and Sister Medical Team, Focus on Patient Care Runs More than Skin Deep Siblings Beth McDonough, PA-C and William Bethea, DO, bonded over a lot of things growing up, including teenage acne. But it was their love for their family, their love for the practice of medicine, their love of caring for others and their love for Ormond Beach that resulted in the realization of their dream to come ‘home’ again, to work together to help others feel more confident about the skin they’re in. Billy and Beth Go from Beaches to Gators… “Billy and I are the youngest of four – we have an older sister and brother,” said McDonough. “We are third-generation Ormond Beach residents. Our grandmother is a local artist and 98 years old. She felt this was a great place to raise a family, and so do we. We have this wonderful community. Access to gorgeous beaches. Why would you want to live anywhere else?” McDonough, a former Miss Seabreeze and Miss Volusia County, struggled with skin problems as a teen. It piqued an interest in health which led her to the University of Florida in Gainesville to pursue a degree in nutrition. Following graduation, she became a nutritional counselor and a teacher, which was a good fit for someone who really liked helping people one-on-one. And while she enjoyed counseling and teaching, she learned she really liked everything to do with the skin, so back she went to the UF College of Medicine to earn her degree and certification as a certified physician assistant. Meanwhile, Dr. Bethea earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida and was then commissioned by the U.S. Air Force while completing medical school. Upon graduation in 2005, Dr. Bethea served meritoriously as an active-duty Flight Surgeon in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Afghanistan’s Enduring Freedom campaigns. He states, “I take tremendous pride in this great country and was honored to serve the medical needs of our military men and women.” …And Realize There’s No Place Like Home Although she worked in dermatology in Naples for 15 years, McDonough always felt it was in the cards for her to move back to Ormond Beach. In August 2021, she got the chance and returned to the area with her husband and kids. Her brother, who was working as a dermatologist for Advanced Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery’s Ormond Beach location, said, “Come work in dermatology with me”. They started working together in October. “I really enjoy medical dermatology, helping patients from birth up to their 100’s with skin conditions including acne, rashes, mole checks, and skin cancer,” said McDonough. “I also enjoy performing cosmetic procedures with BOTOX® Cosmetic, dermal fillers and PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) treatments for facial rejuvenation and hair loss.” Dr. Bethea concentrates on general dermatology and skin cancer detection and treatments. He performs surgical procedures, which McDonough does not. However, both participate in clinical research studies, many of which are conducted through Advanced Dermatology’s Research Division right in the Ormond Beach office. Beth and her brother’s wife Ann-Marie have been friends since childhood. Beth was a Gatorette at the University of Florida, and Ann-Marie was a Dazzler (which was part of the dance troupe). Patients Benefit from their Interaction “The most rewarding part of working together is the impact it has on our ability to help our patients. Our close communication helps us diagnose and treat our mutual patients more effectively.  In a lot of ways, we can read each other’s mind at work.” Thinking back to special moments throughout her lifetime, Beth remembers back to her wedding day. “Both of my brothers were in full military uniforms for my wedding. It was stunning and I was so proud.” McDonough has never stopped being proud of her family. And she takes that feeling to work every day. Schedule an appointment with our dermatology team, today.

Six Skin Care Tips While Traveling

by Hanna Qasem on Aug 20 2021
Six Skin Care Tips While Traveling The chance to get out and play, laugh, and reconnect with family and friends is not just good for your soul. It may just be good for your skin. Let’s face it. We’ve all been under unusual stress this past year, and stress increases sebum production (the oily, waxy substance your body makes to protect your skin). Stress also reduces blood flow to your skin, increases some of your hormone levels, and keeps your body from regenerating and repairing cells, which normally happens when you rest. As a result, stress can trigger flares of skin conditions like acne, psoriasis and eczema, causing ongoing breakouts and inflammation, and make it harder to heal when breakouts and flares occur. By reducing your chronic stress response, you may be able to reduce inflammation and increased hormone levels and allow cells to rebuild for skin recovery. Hormones also become better regulated when we are happy, and that means healthier skin. Keeping your skin healthy, rejuvenated and refreshed while you’re on vacation Breakouts, rashes, dry skin and sunburns are only a few of the problems your skin may face when you travel. Before you head out for your fantastic new adventure, make sure to think about what your skin will need to feel good and look great. Talk to your dermatologist first if you want information on how to prevent skin problems on the go. Here are six ways travel can affect your skin, and how your can prepare for them. 1. Check the weather. Changes in the weather can really take a toll on the skin. If you're headed where it's humid, pack products – including a good cleanser -- that are lightweight and allow your skin to breathe. 2. Watch out for the sun. You may never spend long periods of time just sunbathing at the beach, but you're still getting more sun than you realize. Window seat on the airplane? Going for a walk to stretch your legs and get acquainted with your destination? Remember, unprotected exposure to the sun’s UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays can cause premature signs of skin aging, tight, dry-feeling skin, and ultimately, skin cancer. Pack broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least 30 SPF and plan to reapply it often. 3. Keep jet-setting from drying your skin. Counter the ultra-low humidity of aircraft cabins by applying a hydrating cream or lotion before you board. And while it is vacation, remember that alcohol can be linked to dehydration both in the air and on the ground. Plan to drink lots of water. And speaking of water, you may see a lot of it during your travels. Generally, skin problems are twice as likely in chlorinated water than in salt water, although salt water can also trigger skin irritations and rashes. Be sure to rinse off well after time in the pool or ocean. 4. Avoid jet lag. Changes in time zones can mean changes in sleep patterns. Not getting enough sleep can lead to noticeable changes in your complexion—like puffy under-eye bags and dark circles. Schedule some time for rest amidst all your play time. Your skin will thank you. 5. Keep germs at bay. We all know the drill by now. Wash your hands. Use hand sanitizer. And DON'T TOUCH YOUR FACE. Some of you document your entire travels on social media. Be sure to clean your smartphone, too, as you may be transferring germs from hands to screen to face. Yuck! 6. "Hotel products are great for your skin", said no one, ever. Who doesn’t love all those little bottles of hair and skin products in that hotel suite? Unfortunately, they might be bad for your skin. Taking your own tried and true skin care products along with you (in TSA-approved bottles if you're flying), can give your skin the tried and true routine it’s craving. This is no time to risk reacting to unknown products you haven't tried before. Need to see your dermatologist before you travel? Book an appointment online or call 866.400.3376 DERM to schedule a consultation with one of our dermatology professionals who can also recommend a whole range of skin care products to use on the road and once you get back home.

Thinning Hair and Hair Loss: When to See a Dermatologist

by Hanna Qasem on Jun 22 2021
Thinning Hair and Hair Loss: When to See a Dermatologist “By the time men first notice they’re losing their hair or that their hairline is changing, about 50% of their hair follicles have been affected,” said Surgical Hair Restoration Fellow Rahil Roopani, MD, of Leavitt Medical Group. “This generally can happen as early as their 20s, with most men starting to care about it in their 30s. Dr. Roopani is passionate about providing a holistic, patient-centered approach to hair loss that combines the art and science of medicine with scientific research. “For those who notice they’re shedding more than the average 100 - 150 scalp hairs a day, see a receding hairline, balding at the crown, or have a strong history of male pattern baldness in their family, seeking the help of a dermatologist early on will likely have the greatest impact on reducing or reversing hair loss. “In androgenetic alopecia (in men also known as male-pattern baldness), susceptible hair follicles (usually at the top of the scalp including the vertex) will progressively go from producing thick "terminal" hair to thin "vellus" hair. This will continue until eventually the follicle will no longer exist,” said Dr. Roopani.  ”The goal of therapy is to make thinning, vellus-type hair into terminal, more thick and natural-looking hair. Some thinning hair can be regrown in a thicker, more robust fashion, however this will take time and can be frustrating to some patients.” What treatments can help regrow hair? “Therapies are different, and there’s no silver bullet for everyone,” said Dr. Roopani. “Understanding the cause of your hair loss is important. While male pattern hair loss (also called androgenic alopecia) is one of the most common reasons men lose their hair as they get older, your dermatologist will look at all the factors that may be at the root of your problem. These can include common factors such as genetics, age, trauma, stress, and less common factors such as nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalance, pro-inflammatory states, and underlying health conditions such as metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular disease.” Dr. Roopani and a team of hair loss experts, including Advanced Dermatology’s Natalie Kash, MD, a board-certified dermatologist with a special interest in hair loss, and world-renowned hair loss expert Dr. Matt Leavitt, who is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Advanced Dermatology, have authored a comprehensive report which will soon be published nationally as an article in the journal Dermatologic Clinics. The article, entitled “Clinical Patterns of Hair Loss in Men: Is DHT the Only Culprit?” looks at the many different factors which may have an impact on the treatment of hair loss in men. “Once your doctor understands what factors may be impacting your hair loss, he or she will make recommendations. While many of these therapies work better in combination, some require multiple visits to your dermatologist, and all require some level of compliance, as the effectiveness of most treatments can reverse once they are stopped.”   Most common treatment options for hair loss Some of the therapies for thinning hair or hair loss, from simplest to most sophisticated, include: Shampoos and conditioners formulated to create denser hair and improve the health of your scalp and hair. The hair care experts at Advanced Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery have created proprietary Proscriptix FX® hair and scalp therapy products which combine specialized medical expertise and validated science to effectively address your concerns. Daily supplements and vitamins that are professionally formulated to nourish hair from the inside out, and target the underlying causes of compromised hair follicule function. Minoxidil (Rogaine®) is an over-the-counter topical medication that works at a molecular/cellular level to widen blood vessels to deliver more oxygen-rich blood to the hair follicles. It also helps increase the size of hair follicles, which promotes the growth of thicker, stronger hairs. In addition, the topical treatment shortens the resting phase of hair growth, which means your hair stays in the growth phase longer. Finasteride (Propecia®), is a prescription medication taken orally every day, and is also used to treat benign prostate disease. In a significant number of men, finasteride promotes scalp hair growth and prevents further hair loss. Other oral medications for hair loss include spironolactone (Carospir®, Aldactone®) and oral dutasteride (Avodart). Plasma Therapy (PRP) for hair loss is a safe, effective treatment that uses your body’s own natural ability to prompt hair growth. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), also known as Red Light Laser Therapy or cold laser therapy is a safe, well tolerated non-surgical hair restoration therapy that strengthens hair follicles, thickens thinning and slows down hair loss. Surgical hair restoration is the only permanent treatment option for androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss).Your Advanced Dermatology hair restoration and hair transplant experts can help you schedule an appointment with a hair transplant surgeon to evaluate your needs. “Many men think their appearance directly impacts what is happening in their life. When they lose their hair, they feel like they have lost a part of themselves. By talking with a dermatologist early about their hair loss, many men can see positive changes in their overall health, outlook and confidence.” To learn what may be at the root of your hair and scalp conditions or to learn more about treatment options, schedule an appointment today.

To Develop a Personalized Skin Care Routine and Receive Expert Advice Have you ever felt overwhelmed while browsing the beauty aisle or trying to formulate a skin care regimen to fit your needs? Do you find yourself asking, “what does a vitamin C serum really do anyway? Can I use retinol with an AHA? Will a night cream make me break out?” An aesthetician can help you sift through the complexities of skincare products by first providing an in-depth skin analysis and determining your skin type. She will then devise an easy-to-follow and results-oriented skin care plan personalized to your individual skin type and your lifestyle. Your aesthetician has a wealth of product knowledge to offer and is a far better resource for advice than Google. Stop wasting your time and money on skincare products that might not work for you, and get expert advice from an aesthetician instead. 2. For Safe Results and Minimal Downtime from Advanced and High-Tech Treatments Sometimes, it’s best to leave it up to the pros. Treatments like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, microneedling and extractions are all incredible ways to rejuvenate your skin, but attempting these at home through DIY methods often results in more harm than good. Our aestheticians have the training, knowledge and expertise to safely and effectively perform these advanced treatments. For Professional Results Not Available Through Over-the-Counter Products While skincare products can help to gradually enhance and maintain your skin, in-office treatments offered by our aestheticians can often yield visible results in shorter time frames. Professional treatments like microdermabrasion help to brighten and resurface, while IPL and microneedling can stimulate collagen and reduce signs of aging. Extractions relieve congested skin and can quickly reduce the inflammation of existing acne. A HydraFacial® can provide a nearly instantaneous, dewy glow. Our aestheticians also offer cosmetic enhancements like permanent makeup that will make an immediate difference in your appearance. lip, brow, lash and scar camouflage treatments can accentuate your features and reduce or eliminate the need for makeup. How’s that for instant gratification? 4. For Relaxation and Stress Relief Skin care is self-care, and taking the time to care for yourself simply feels good. Our aestheticians work to ensure that every patient feels relaxed and pampered, so not only will you leave your appointment looking better than before, but you’ll feel better too. During a facial, your aesthetician will also provide a soothing facial massage, relieving tension and promoting circulation. Research shows that stress can have visible and measurable negative impacts on the appearance of your skin, so stress relief is vital in optimizing your results. At your appointment, you’ll have the opportunity to sit back, relax, and let someone take care of you. Stress Acne? 7 Tips to Avoid Spring Break “outs”

Stress Acne? 7 Tips to Avoid Spring Break “outs” If you have acne, the results of an increase in stress hormones from COVID-19, made even worse by wearing a mask every day and by Spring’s warmer weather, may be popping up all over your face. Stress triggers an increase in the release of the stress hormone cortisol. As cortisol levels increase, other hormones responsible for regulating sebum balance may become disrupted. Sebum is the oily, waxy substance produced by your body that moisturizes, and protects your skin. More oil production means more clogged pores, and more clogged pores mean more breakouts. And that’s not good news if you’re heading to the beach, the slopes, or planning a road-trip for Spring Break. Face the World Again, with Confidence If you’re experiencing stress acne, your first stop should be to your Advanced Dermatology professional who can help you learn about the latest treatment options - including deep-cleansing facials, acne skincare products, and prescription-strength medications.   Dermatologist's Tips to Reduce Stress Acne Breakouts Preventing stress acne is like saying, 'Let's stop life from happening,' but there are ways you can reduce the impact stress has on your skin…and your confidence. 1) Broad-Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen is Spring Break’s Must Wear You know UV rays can cause sun damage, but did you also know they can make your skin more sensitive to breakouts? Enjoy the sun, but make sure you're protected. 2) Rinse Your Face Often The warmer out it gets, the more you sweat. While cleansing too often can dry your skin, be sure to rinse after exercise or being out in the heat. 3) Exfoliate Spring clean your pores by exfoliating every week to get rid of build-up and dead skin. 4) Use Your Acne Cleansers Your cleanser may have dried your skin during the winter, but as it warms up, add it back in at least a few times a week. Consider using convenient moist towelettes – especially if you’re prone to back acne. 5) Use a Light Moisturizer If you don’t moisturize, your sebaceous glands produce more oil to compensate. As Spring and Summer approach, avoid this rebound acne by switching to a light moisturizer without oils or heavy creams. 6) Keep Hair Away from Your Face While You Exercise A sweat-absorbing headband can help keep hair products and oils that occur naturally in your scalp from transferring to your face, shoulders and back. 7) Wash Your Masks and Pillowcases Spring cleaning is important. Bacteria can build up on cloth surfaces, so you want to wash them often. You’ll be coming into contact with more germs when you travel, so keep your hands away from your face. Clear Up All Your Acne Questions Book an appointment online or call 866.400.3376 DERM to schedule a consultation with one of our dermatology professionals who will help explore the best acne treatment options for you.
